Smudging is done by burning certain herbs (in a clay pot or shell fanned with a feather or fan) to remove negativity from a person or area. Burning a candle or bathing with the herbs has the same effect. We use it to cleanse an area and ourselves before ceremonies/prayers, when things are going badly, or someone is arguing/fighting. Smudge is a basic mixture of four sacred herbs: Sage, Sweet grass (also brings sweetness to your life) Cedar, and Tobacco. Scientists began testing to see why indigenous peoples all over the world smudge. They discovered that the four basic herbs (alone or together) removes positive ions from the air which negativity attaches itself to. For example: Have you ever driven to the beach and you had to fight traffic and been in a bad mood when you’ve arrived?
